1999 Valyrie Reverse Trike

« on: July 21, 2010, 08:13:45 PM »

Not knowing any history on my interstate except it had 103k leaves me somewhat in the dark. The right bank has some minor oil smoke when first starting in the morning although it does not seem to use any measurable amount of oil. Seems like some valve seal leaking similar to the old chevy's.
Other odd think is a definite knock which is only noticeable on idle. It's not a wrist pin or rod bearing double knock but rather a piston slap type of knock. My guess is the unit overheated once which would explain the knock and oil smoke. I don't plan on doing anything about it as it's more cosmetic than anything else. Certainly does not effect the rideability at all. Just wondering if anyone else has or had a similar situation.

My Standard developed a knock this spring. It would only happen when warming up and when I had 87 octane in her. This was with the 6 degree trigger wheel.

Depending sometimes how far over your bike leans when parked the oil tends to travel to low side and then when you start up one side will smoke more than other till uprighted for awhile and will have a small knock that should go away soon. I have had the same issue since I got my bike new and runs fine. Mine is a 97 and mine does lean over alittle more than most for some reason.

The lean on mine is zero. I know my gl1500 used to puff a little smoke off the left side if it sat for a long time but this is the right and it's not a ping it's a mild knock. My guess is it overheated once so I have some piston slap. I may just buy a spare 1500 engine just in case and that way I'll have reverse too.
I can probably wait a couple hundred thousand miles though, you know how these sixes just don't like to die.

Is you idle speed set right? 900 is a minimum.

I have no tachometer but I would say from 500-1200 it does some thumping. I posted this originally to see if others had similar engine noises as I forget what the 97 sounded like as that was several years ago.  Worst case it will get worse but I am thinking it will just keep going as is. I am also getting some tappet noise when it's warm so I need to look into that. Other than that she runs 100%
I may do the goldwing block swap this winter as reverse on the trike may be a real plus especially now that I added a trailer.
