I was pulling the bike's rear apart to do it's long-overdue 10K mile inspection, and found this:

this first pic shows the amount of the caliper that's been taken off:

As can be seen on the first picture, the side of caliper's been sheared off. I felt up underneath the hitch plate, and there's a good chunk of the plate taken out as well.

What concerns me is that the shocks have been allowing the rear end to compress far enough for this to happen. I know there was a few times when it bottomed out, so I stiffened the shocks up a bit.

What does the collective think about this? Should I be looking at new shocks? A new trailer hitch plate?  huh

Checking out the shock grommets - one of them's so-so, while the other one's completely history. Would this be consistent with a shock that's at the end of it's life?

It's probably time for some new shocks, But I think I would consider removing a half moon shaped chunck  from the left hand side frame on that hitch. I appears to be heavy enough to be fine with a little removed to clear the caliper. Glad you caught it before it gat too bad.
