TRAFFIC DETOUR FOR LACROSSE RIDE IN IF GOING I-90/39 OUT OF ILLINOIS

Wanted to warn you that there is some ROAD WORK being done on I-90/39 heading North starting in Wisconsin not to far past the border with Illinois and on the way home from LaCrosse this past weekend witnessed first hand the HORRIFIC TRAFFIC JAM that went for 20+ miles and it was a solid parking lot.  You do not want to get stuck in this I can promise you.  So......out of the kindness of my BIG HEART I have drawn up an alternate route for you, plus it will be much more scenic as I have taken this route a whole lot over the years.  Write this route down, put it in your GPS if you have one or just follow the info I am providing.

When you are approaching the Illinois Wisconsin border get over in the far right lane and looks for Hyway 81 West in Beloit, get off there and HEAD WEST ON 81

81 W to 11 W to hwy 69 N towards Monroe, Montecello

69 N  to hwy 39 W in New Glarus, go thru New Glarus  (William Tell Town, very cool) on 39 W

39 W  to 18 W  stay on 18 W to the Mississippi River and you will be in Prairie du Chien

In PdC 18 W  to 35 N  which is the Great River Road

35 N to LaCrosse  then take 53 E  till you see the Motel on the Right Side, it is down aways but before you go on ramp for Interstate, they are off George Street and Rose  you will see North Country Steak House and Mc Donald's and Burger King......the motel is right across the street by the Kwik Trip Petrol Station.

Yep, right by my house in Monticello WI off Hwy. 69.
If you want the twisties, (but watch out for those manure spreaders leaving you know what on the back roads though) on 39W out of New Glarus heading NW towards Dodgeville WI, this is the place to be for sure!
You could even head from Chicago IL NW thru Rockford and Freeport if you do not like the Interstate traffic/speeds up to Hwy. 26 in IL and once you reach WI, 26 becomes hwy 69 thru Monticello/New Glarus and go from there.  You may lose a little time unless traffic jams on I-90, but much less traffic, better scenery, and even maybe a shorter mileage route?  Prairie du Chien to LaCrosse along the Great River Road cannot be beat-much better than Interstate anyday!!!!

For all you flavored popcorn lovers coming this way, be sure to take a rest stop in Montfort WI (don't blink, you'll miss it) on the left side of the road at rural route 1 popcorn outlet store. Best flavored popcorn bar none at:  http://www.ruralroute1.com/
