For those of you at PDC last fall, I was getting some play in the driveline when changing between accel and decel.

Finally got around to taking the wheel off and checking.  I had 10,000 miles since last off, when put on CT.  There is a little play in the dampers in the wheel, but not a lot.  However, the pinion cup, driveshaft was totally dry, no oil or grease.  All rust.  And splines on both need replacing, so need new driveshaft and cup. Will put on new seal also.

Last time I treated like the book said.  Cleaned out the holes good, and used a small amount of waterproof grease.  So, what happened?

I am going to use more waterproof Belray grease this time.  New seal, new driveshaft, new pinion cup.

Now, I am worried about my "new" IS.  Had to put a new pumpkin on that, as the gears were worn.  I also put in a new U-joint, because the mileage is 67,000.  Have not pulled the ujoint on the 97 yet.  I replaced all three o rings on both.

I put the IS back together the same, small amount of grease with clean oil holes.  Now, I am wondering about it?

I have been preaching that that is the way to go, not the large amount of grease way, now I am not sure.

Thoughts?

Seems strange to me. There must have been a seal that failed if all of the grease was gone and everything was okay 10K miles ago.

I'll have to make sure and check all of mine on the new IS, too. Makes me nervous after doing all of the work on my Standard. The guy I bought the IS from used a shop for all maintenance, but who knows what kind of work they did.

I agree if all of the grease is gone. Each time I got a tire change at a dealer I reminded them and also went and checked for myself (walked into the service bay). Two of my friends have had break downs due to dry rear drives after the shops swore up and down they were greased. Last winter when we took the wheel off (at home) we made sure it got a lot of grease.

Today I used an air impact gun to remove the nut holding on the cup.  I then removed the oil drain plug, drained, and refilled with Royal Purple gear oil.  I wish I had measured the oil I drained out.  It did not seem more than 1/2 of the correct amount to add. Maybe only 1/3?    150cc is to be added.  I refilled using a big syringe that goes to that amount. Put it back in on the bench, thru the drain hole.
I drained and filled last time while it was on the bike.  Filled until came out the fill hole.  I wonder if somehow I only got about 1/2 the correct amount in?  And if that caused the problem?

On the IS I got this winter, that cup was drenched in gear oil, very nice looking.  I wonder if on the 97 std. I had enough to oil the rear end gears, but not enough to get up and come thru the two holes, into the pinion cup?

bullettooth81-  I see this is your first post- Welcome aboard!  Lots of good people and good info here.  Have you put yours back together yet?  I'm wondering how big of a difference you noticed.  Did you pull it apart because of a problem, or just to inspect it?

Thanks, I've been reading the posts, but just never signed up myself.

I'm still waiting on parts, I ordered a used driveshaft, and a new oil seal.  I was able to 'borrow' the cup from a spare rear end that my uncle had.  Once I get it together I'll let everyone know how it feels now.

I did notice some gear lash a few weeks prior to it shelling out on me.  I was running down the road and I felt/heard a 'click' and a jolt then it increased in frequency and I had no power.  I pulled in the clutch and came to a stop.  When I tried to take off, the driveshaft just spun.  Sad day to have the Valk sitting on the side of the road.  Once I pulled the differential from the swing arm I knew immediatly what it was when about a cupfull of dust came out.  Teeth on the shaft and the cup were about gone.  I have a feeling the fluid was running a little low and the holes in the cup were a little plugged.  Something that is now on my maint. schedule.

Hopefully, I'll have all my parts and have it back together prior to July 24th.  There is a 24 hour scavenger hunt that I'm signed up for that day.  Need to get some miles on it prior to that.

Be sure to check the wheel splines and flange splines too.

You know it!  The splines and flanges are still about PERFECT!  I was suprised after comparing it to a partially worn out rear end.  I chalk that up to always greasing the rear end and changing the o rings.

Had to rebuild the wheel splines on mine but the driveshaft splines were perfect and the holes plugged. Go figure!

How do I remove the shaft from the Hub?   How do you remove and replace the shaft seal?  How much Belray grease should i put on the splines, Packed? or just coated?  I have never pulled the shaft before sorry to say so I can only hope mine is ok.  Thanks Mike

Hey guys!  Alph, Nitro, and myself just arrived at Thunder Bay, ON.  We are going around the big lake on the CA side.  Have reservations in Sault St. Marie tomorrow night.  About 450 miles of slow two lane.  Will be a big day.  Wish we had a couple more days to dally around.

To remove the shaft, just give it a good tug.  It will/should pop right out.  To replace the seal, you will need to remove the keeper and the spring off the other end, slide the old seal off, and then slide the new on, and replace the spring and keeper.

Make sure the two holes in the bottom of the pinion cup are clear.  Run something in and out of them.  Clean the splines and cup good.  Then, it is up to you on the grease.  Honda calls for a light grease, with the rear end oil then coming out of the rear end, keeping the cup and splines lubed.  Does work well.  Others prefer to use a lot of grease, which will plug the holes to the rear end, and rely on that grease keeping the cup lubed.  I use Hondas method, worked twice, did not once, but I believe I had the oil level a little low that time.

Your $, your call.  Good and bad results each way.  Good luck.
