Recent '98 purchase. Past owner said the hard bags were added. There were keys for the bags or so I thought in the bag. I can't get the bag locked. The key goes in and turns 360 and never locks. There is a slot you have to align on the latch to get the tip of the key in. I attached two pics but didn't get the latch itself. Can someone identify the brand of bag and if maybe I possibly have the wrong key, wrong process, or defective latches. Also, in the one picture there is a bracket with two holes in it just inside the muffler. I wonder what that is for?

You might have to go to a locksmith to check out the latches, and maybe get new keys made.  The two holes are for another bracket that attaches there, which I assume you do not have?

Sure looks like stock Valkyrie bags to me / try a local lock shop for a fix.

Craig, on the brackets issue.  You didn't mention whether this is a Tour or a I/S.

I just went and looked at my '99 I/S.  The bracket around the front of your bags looks like mine, but there is a difference in the rear.  Is it easy to move the bracket or it is rock solid if you give it a shake??  If it moves, you got problems.

I agree that that they look like Valk bags.   Also sounds like the lock have issues.  My key only turns 90 degrees to lock/unlock.  Sounds like lock smith time.

Those are NOT Honda bags. I think they are Champions. Most locksmiths can make short work of this type of problem.

It is a GL1500C that had hard bags and windshield added. Will see what a locksmith has to say but also have an email into Champions about replacement latches.

I got a reply from Champions.

Well, you could be, but probably not.......Smiley
Try this, push in slightly on the lock about in the middle while trying
to lock the bag. Sometimes that will release the pressure on the spring
in the lock and allow it to function as it should.

Failing that, replacement locks are available.....they run about 22.50
ea plus s/h....

I tried his suggestion figuring both locks couldn't be bad. It didn't work but I found out they would lock with the lid up. I tried again with lid down and pressing in firmly on the latch.
I was able to get them to lock and unlock. A bit trying each time but they do work. I have a note back into them to see if the replacement locks are of any better design.

I had a similar problem with one of my new bags. Turned out that it was missing a rubber "O" ring that mounted on the inside top to make it water tight. It also kept the lock from spinning in place. It acted as a lock washer. I replaced it for about $0.35 and have not had a problem since.

The locks are working now that I figured out a procedure to lock them. Alittle down pressure on the lid and they lock right up. Since these don't appear to be Honda bags I wonder what I would face if I added the I/S trunk. Kinda in the market for one. I know the I/S lids hinge differently.

Your bag lids would not open very far with the IS trunk in place. The stock IS bags lift off completely (do not have hinges) to accomodate for the trunk.
